The problem
What goes wrong without this.
Most Indian manufacturing plants sit somewhere between fully manual and genuinely automated, and the gap costs them in ways that are hard to see from inside. Quality variation is attributed to operators rather than to the absence of process control. Downtime is recorded in a register nobody analyses. Energy consumption per unit is unknown because it is never measured at machine level.
The response is often to buy automation hardware without first identifying which constraint it is meant to relieve. A robot on a line whose bottleneck is upstream changes nothing. A SCADA system that nobody has been trained to interrogate becomes an expensive display.
Automation returns are real but they are specific. They come from removing a named constraint — cycle time on the limiting operation, rejection rate at a particular station, changeover duration, unplanned stoppage on a critical machine — and they need to be identified before equipment is specified.
