Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals
Process plants where environmental clearance, effluent management and process safety govern the project timeline.
Sector context
What shapes projects here
Chemical and pharmaceutical projects are regulated more heavily than most manufacturing, and the regulatory path usually sets the schedule. Environmental clearance where a full appraisal is required is commonly the longest single activity, and it has to be started before rather than alongside detailed engineering.
Effluent and emissions management is a design constraint rather than an add-on. Treatment capacity, discharge route and, increasingly, zero liquid discharge requirements shape both the capital cost and the site selection decision.
Process safety carries its own engineering discipline — hazard assessment, containment, relief systems and material handling — and it is scrutinised at approval and at inspection. Retrofitting it after a plant is designed is expensive and frequently incomplete.
Typical project profile
What a project in this sector usually involves
Indicative ranges based on sector norms. Actual figures depend on scale, technology, location and configuration.
Capex range
₹10 Cr – ₹300 Cr
Timeline
18–30 months to commissioning
Key clearances
Incentives commonly available
- PLI for bulk drugs and medical devices
- State capital subsidy
- Interest subvention
- Export incentives
Eligibility usually turns on decisions made before capex is committed. It is worth assessing early.
